Diamond rings are special gifts. Whether for an engagement, wedding, anniversary, or milestone birthday, a diamond symbolises love, endurance and purity.
Can you imagine a diamond engagement or wedding ring made from a tress of your future husband’s hair? Or a diamond ring for your anniversary made from a small snip of your children’s hair? Or even a diamond ring for a loved one’s birthday made from your very own locks? It’s all possible, and you (or your future spouse) don’t have to part with very much hair to achieve it!
How do you create a diamond from a lock of hair?
Creating a diamond from a lock of hair is the same process used for creating diamonds out of ashes.
First, you produce a sample of hair.
It doesn’t have to be much – you can create a diamond with as little as 0.5 – 2 grams of hair. It also doesn’t have to be all from the same person – you can provide a sample of you and your spouse’s hair together, or one made up from all of your kids – you can even include the family pet if you really want to!
Second, the sample is analysed.
The hair sample is analysed to determine its chemical makeup and assess how much carbon can be extracted from the hair.
Third, the carbon is extracted from the sample.
Diamonds are made out of carbon atoms arranged in a tetrahedral configuration called a “diamond cubic”. Therefore, you need to extract the carbon from the hair sample to be able to make a diamond out of it.
Fourth, the carbon is added to the diamond-growing foundation.
The extracted carbon is used to create a mixture from which a crystalline matrix will grow. This matrix is the foundation of the future diamond.
Fifth, the mixture goes through high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) production.
The foundation material is put into the core of a HPHT machine (also known as a BARS apparatus), in which it will be subjected to temperatures and pressures similar to those deep in the earth’s crust (up to 2000°C and 60,000 atmospheres). The end result is a diamond made in the same way as a natural diamond.
Lastly, you cut, polish and set the diamond
The rough diamond goes through the same process of cutting and polishing as traditional diamonds, from when it’s ready to set in the ring.
How much hair do you need to make a diamond?
Not very much at all! You can create a diamond with as little as 0.5 – 2 grams of hair – generally, one lock will do the job. You can ask your hairdresser to catch one for you at the next hair appointment – or, if your hair is longer, you can snip an unnoticeable bit off the end.
The age or colour of the hair doesn’t matter, as it’s the carbon from the hair that makes the diamond. It also doesn’t matter if the hair is curly or straight, dry or oily, dyed or natural – in fact, it doesn’t even have to be human hair! You can immortalise your beloved dog or cat in the diamond as well.
Why create a diamond from hair?
Why go to the trouble of making a diamond out of hair when you can buy a natural mined diamond?
Man-made diamonds have been around for a while, but in recent years, the quality has increased to the extent that man-made and earth-mined diamonds are identical. In addition to this, the ethical questions surrounding earth-mined diamond’s sourcing and procurement aren’t an issue for man-made diamonds, which is why many socially-conscious consumers are now opting for the conflict-free alternative.
Here are some scenarios where a diamond made out of you or your loved one’s hair would be the ideal choice:
When you commit your life to someone, your engagement ring should be a unique symbol of the strength of your love for that person.
What better way to make your engagement ring unique than by creating your own diamond out of you and your partner’s hair? There will only be one like it in the world.
The day you say “I do” is special, and the exchanging of rings is a symbol of the unending love you share.
With a diamond ring made from you and your partner’s hair, you are encapsulating the essence of your love and wearing a lasting reminder of your wedding vows wherever you go.
With a significant anniversary on the horizon, you may be wondering what gift to give that’s as valuable as your marriage.
Imagine a diamond ring made from your children’s hair? You could add your own to it, or even your beloved dog or cat’s hair! An indestructible symbol of your family bond for your spouse to wear everywhere they go.
Diamond Rings for milestone birthday gifts
Milestone birthdays are important occasions in a person’s life, and it can be difficult to pick a gift that truly represents how much you appreciate them.
But a diamond ring with a unique diamond that is the only one of its kind – just like your loved one – is pretty hard to beat!
Diamond Rings with diamonds made from hair
You don’t have to stop at diamond rings, either – you can make diamond earrings, diamond pendants – pretty much any diamond jewellery can use a man-made diamond. You can even replace a lower-quality diamond with a premium-quality man-made diamond in an existing piece of jewellery, or add more diamonds to an old ring to give it new life.
